Why is it that Jewish headstones have rocks on them?
This is a Jewish custom, when a person visits a tomb to mark that you have been there and respect the dead, a small stone is placed on the tombstone.
It is difficult to know exactly when and why the custom arose, and whether it was strictly Jewish. This may begin when (not all Jews) people (not all Jews) weigh their tombs or seal them with stones (probably Romans or earlier) to: (1) Prevent any animal (including animals) from harming the body , (2) Prevent demons from escaping and harming us.
